Since 1990, the Joint Voluntary Agency/Nairobi (JVA) has assisted more than 136,316 refugees from 22 countries in Africa to resettle in the United States. In FY 2007, the JVA resettled 13,386 refugees to the United States. JVA implements the resettlement program through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Department of State. JVA/Nairobi is responsible for processing refugees located in Eastern and Southern Africa, and for providing cultural orientation for those accepted for U.S. resettlement.

Our sister organization, OPE/Accra, is responsible for the processing of refugees in Western and Central Africa. JVA field teams travel extensively throughout the processing region to interview refugees in their country of asylum.

Church World Service, a voluntary agency resettling refugees in the United States, administers JVA/Nairobi.
